Our story is one of community and commitment. The community of people who, more than 55 years ago, dreamed of bringing the best medical care available to the residents of Comal County, and the commitment of hundreds of physicians, health care workers, and Volunteers delivering the highest quality of care to all those we are privileged to serve.
In the early 1950s, a group of business and civic leaders led by H.C. McKenna set out to privately secure the necessary funds to build a community Hospital. After securing the Hospital site from the City of New Braunfels, this group organized a fundraising effort in 1952, often going door-to-door asking local citizens for their support. The generosity of the people of New Braunfels produced more than $500,000 for the initiative, which was augmented by a $280,000 Hill-Burton grant.
October 1953 marked the grand opening celebration for the new 40- bed New Braunfels Hospital. The original structure still stands today as the core of CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital - New Braunfels. In 1973, New Braunfels Hospital changed its name to McKenna Memorial Hospital in honor of H.C. McKenna, who served as president of the Hospital's board of trustees for more than 20 years.
After operating as an independent Hospital for more than 50 years, the Hospital was acquired by CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System. The board decided the best way to ensure the strongest health care future for the New Braunfels and Comal County area was to sell McKenna Memorial Hospital to a health system with the extensive resources, which would be needed to meet long-term growth of this rapidly growing community.
CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System is a vital part of New Braunfels and Comal County providing significant programs, services, and resources that benefit the health and well-being of the community. Its primary goal is to expand access to care, close to home.
Our mission is to extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ to all those we are privileged to serve.
